Tomato – Tommy Toe

The Tommy Toe Heirloom Tomato, originating from the Ozark Mountains, is known for its glossy red, 1 to 1½-inch oval to round fruits. These tomatoes are versatile, making them ideal for salads or juicing. They are also resistant to early blight and black rot, ensuring a robust and reliable crop.

Tommy Toe Tomatoes mature in approximately 70 days, making them a mid-season heirloom variety.

The Tommy Toe Tomato is an indeterminate variety, meaning it grows continuously and produces fruit throughout the growing season, providing a consistent supply of glossy, flavorful tomatoes.

To grow Tommy Toe Tomatoes, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Plant seeds ¼ inch deep in sterile seed-starting mix at 70-90°F, where germination typically occurs in 6-14 days. Once seedlings develop true leaves, transplant them into 3- to 4-inch pots, keeping them in full light at cooler temperatures of 60-70°F. After hardening off, plant them outdoors in full sun, spacing them 18-30 inches apart in rows 3-4 feet apart.

To prevent blossom end rot, add one tablespoon of lime, ground oyster shells, or crushed eggshells to the planting hole to supply calcium for strong cell walls. Improve soil fertility by including one tablespoon each of aged compost and bone meal. For tall seedlings, plant deeper to encourage root growth along the stem, resulting in stronger, more resilient plants.
