Q. Hi, I am wondering which tomatoes you would recommend for canning, mainly juice and salsa tomatoes. I usually grow Amish Paste or Roma’s. I want to stay away from GMO’s.
Juice and Salsa Tomatoes
A. For our recommendations it will depend upon the flavor you are looking for. If you are looking for a more traditional flavor from your juice and salsa tomatoes, like that in commercial varieties, we would say go with the Campbell 33 and/or the Heinz 2274. If you’d like to have a little more heirloom tomato flavor and variety to it, we’d recommend what others say and tell you to throw in a variety of tomatoes.
For a good juice and salsa tomato with a touch more sweetness we’d say try the Golden Jubilee, Garden Peach, Nebraska Wedding, Kentucky Beefsteak, or Black Krim, or a good variety of them all. For a bit more traditional flavor we’d suggest the Box Car Willie, Beefsteak, and/or Mortgage Lifter. Amish Paste and Roma, are our traditional favorite for canning, also, so we wouldn’t give up on these for sauces, canned tomatoes, etc.
Our favorite stewed tomatoes, were from last year’s harvest when we threw in a variety of our heirloom tomatoes, including our main favorites so far, Amish Paste and Anna Russian. The best stewed tomatoes we’d ever had! We hope this helps you, and wish you a great growing season and delicious tomato juice and salsa!
